Total Film - Magazine Front Cover Mock Up

This is my mock up of my magazine front cover. I have used kept to the house style that of Total Film. For example, the masthead overlaps the image. The image i am going to use will be an image of the main character, facing away from the camera. I will also use some buzz words and pugs to attract the audience, in which the total film features are. I will make sure that the title of my film stands out so that the audience are in the knowledge of what the iamge is relative to.

Production Schedule

This is the production schudule for the making of our film trailer. The key at the bottom of the image, corresponds to the colours in the table.

Below is the Daily Planning sheet:

Locations

1)Ballswood Bridge - Maghull

We are going to use ballswood bridge in Maghull as we feel it will add a grungy effect to the scene. We already know that there is some graffiti under the motorway bridge from visiting the locations before filming.

2) Underpass Subway - Maghull

We are going to use the underpass subway in Maghull as we feel that this location will be fitting into the scene of where the main charcter drops the spray cans. It is also used in one of the running scenes, showing how it is a normal setting or low status.

3) Carpark - Maghull Square

We are going to use the carpark in Maghull, for the drive by scene in which on of the main characters gets shot. We feel this is a suitable location as it is out in the open, making the shooting unexpected, and had enough space for the car to escape.

4) Renshaw Street & Quiggins Store - Liverpool City Centre

This is where one of the main scenes happens in the film which is the drug deal. This changes the concept of the film fro graffiti to the dark side of which drugs are involved. We used this location as when we are going to film it, it is going to be dark and we used the busy scenery to get a genuine effect. Here we also filmed inside the store Quiggins. We got permission to film as long as we were very quick. There will be alot of graffiti to film as we have checked it out before hand.

5)Hudson Park

We are going to use the side of hudson park to film the fight scene in which the two main charcters get involved in a 'scuffle'. We feel this is a good location to use as it seems that they are hiding away from someone, in an empty, dirty place.

6) Red Lion Bridge - Maghull

The Red Lion bridge is where the walking scene of the two main charcters are introduced together. We have chosen this location becuase the persepctive of the camera angle that we are going to use will add the effect of them being of close friendship.

Prop list

We used a number of props in our film, to add a specific effect to the scene. Here are the main props:

Spray can & Deodrant can:

We will use this in a number of scenes. In total we will use 2 empty cans. For the spraying scenes, we will use a deodrant can, to give the effect that he was actually vandilising a wall. When in fact, there will be no premanent graffiti made. To make sure that the audience were fooled, we will add the scene where the spray cans can be seen. The two actual cans that we will use are when he drops them in subway, giving the sound and visual effect of a change in the story.

Gun (Fake:

For the effect of a real gun, we will use a Playstation 2 light gun. We felt that this gun looked very realistic. This is used on the gun scene, when one of the main charcters gets shot. When we first come to the gun, we had to cut the wire off it, so that it was not clear to be a playstation gun. We will also very careful to warn pedestrians that it is only a dummy prop.

Car:

In the drive by scene, we acquired a motor vehicle to give the effect that the audience could not find out who the shooting was done by. The driver in the car has a full licence and was done with the permission from the Maghull council to use the car park, as long as we were not long and loud. As the car pulls away, the car wheels spin quickly to give the effect of a quick getaway. This will be done with care.

Camera Flash:

The camera flash will only be used once in the drive by scene to give the effect of the firing made by the gun. This will be taken inside the motor vehicle as the gun was used. We feel that this prop will be very effective, as the scene will be taken in the dark which will let is stand out with the post production, adding the sound of the gun.

Flour:

We will use flour for the drug scene. This is made by wrapping the flour up in cellotape to give the effect of the drug cocaine. Although this won't be seen very much in the scene, we still felt that it was very easy to make and should be used.

Cigarette:

A cigarette will be used in one of the scenes, as it will introduce one of the main charcters. In this scene the cahracter will be seen blowing smoke into the camera. We have decided to use this prop as it gives the gang effect of smoking and drugs to the film.

Storyboard - RUN

This is the storyboard that we made. The idea of a storyboard is to guide us on what to do when on the location, exactly what happens, any dialect and what shot that is going to be taken. We split it up in to the 5 A4 sheets.

Please note that the storyboard is not exact to the film trailer, it was only a guide

Background Music

As the main theme around our film is gangster related, we decided as a group to use the genre of rap in our trailer. Taking out the lyrics to songs, allowed us to anaylse the rhythm and beat of the music, to see if it fit into our trailer.

We had a few ideas of music choices, but decided on a track by Mobb Deep. This song is called, Surivival of the fittest and the radio edit can be seen below:

The intro to this songs, fits in perfect in the editing drafts of our trailer as it warms the audience up to the main part of the trailer and the film. Overall, we were all very happy with the song choice

Questionnaire Analysis

This is my results from my questionnaire. Looking at 9 applicants, i can gain a view on what i should apply to my film.

I can gather that most of my candidates feel the trailer is the most encouraging aspect of going to see a film. In our project we must make sure that if this is the most appealing, to make sure that it sells the film. Using quick cuts and edits of action will create suspense for the audience.

I also gathered that the comedy action genre is the most prefered. However, we are going to create a genre of Action/ Drama as this is what we feel to be the most comfortable genre, allowing us to diverse in ideas.

Some candidates do buy film magazines. Knowing this now, i have to make sure that front cover of the magazine that i am going to create must be of very high quality. I will research what film magazine front covers have been made, and apply this to my own creation. I will look at the tecniques used, such as the puffs and pugs that apply to the house style of the music magazine.

Our Film Synopsis

RUN: There Is Never Enough Time

Genre: Action, Drama

Vincent 'vinnie' Fitzpatrick aka Taze is a graffiti artist in Liverpool, he is a part of a gang of fellow graffiti artists called 'N3T', they become dominant (graffiti kings) in the underground graffiti world within Liverpool. When the intentions of the gang turn away from the art and towards money, drugs and violent crime, Vincent decides that he doesn't want to be part of the gang anymore (the determining factor for him wanting to run away is during an incident with a rival gang which leaves him seriously injured and his brother dead), however his fellow gang members aren't as enthusiastic for the idea and go after him to show him leaving the gang isn't as easy as simply running away. He remains in the graffiti culture alone and forever running.

We believe that this is a perfect synopsis for an Action Drama film. It has a consistancy of Action: the graffiti, the crime etc and Drama: The death of Vincents brother and the fall of realtionships between the gang/ crew.

History of Trailers

The first was broadcasted on a U.S theatre screen in November 1913 for the musical 'The Pleasure Seekers'. The most recognised trailers were made in the 1950's. They were most known for big font and limited shots. The trailers are completed before the post production of a film, to show glimpses of what it is about, trying to sell by using suspense.

The 1960's seen the Psycho trailer. This is a black and white trailer, using quick cuts to show the panic used in most horror trailers. Alfred Hitchcock is a voice over for the trailer, explaining the mystery of the film entails. There is also text on the trailer, still used today, showing who the director is. In this case the director is very well known for his popular films.

The 1970's saw the Star Wars trailer which was revolutionary at the time, using new technology. The use of computer animated images allowed the audience to think that they were seeing life in space.

After the 1960's, there was no big text as the image has dried. Quick cutting is used as a ontage vs length, to show a difeent perspective for the railer. In the 170's and 80's, it drawn the target audience in alot more with more films releasing trailers to advertise it.

More modern trailers, last for 2:30 minutes and try t be unique. Now that there are so many films being introduced, the trailer is the best way of advertising, allowing the audience to make a judgmennt on whether to see or not. This now allows experts to find alternative ways to shoot trailers, mixing up the story and changing the order.

Another form of trailers is a teaser trailer. This is usually around 1 minute long.

A teaser trailer for Harry Potter is shown above. This gives subtle glimpses of what has been filmed and an interview with the director about how the production is progressing. There are also behind the scene shots of what happens in the film. At the end is shows what date it will be out, part 1 and part 2. We will not be having a teaser for our trailer, as we will be making a 2 minute trailer.

Taken Trailer - Action Drama

This is the trailer for an action drama that is the same genre as what my trailer is going to be. At the beginning, there is a number of jump cuts which adds tension into the trailer. It allows the reader to get glimpses of what is going to be in the film, adding suspense of what to come in the film. The camera shots that are most common is two shots, between the mother and daughter, the parents and the daughter with her friend. This introduces the characters and their close relationship. An effect used in this trailer, splits the screen into two parts, for a conversation, also known as a split screen. The jump cuts are very short, with just glimpses of the action in the film. In my trailer, i will try to get short glimpses of the main action in the film, that will leave the audience in suspense, so much that they will go out and watch the film. Then there is a fast forward part of the trailer. This just shows alot of action, in fast cuts, so you cannot see exactly what is going on, but creates a panic atmosphere. There is a lot of violence, and action shown, which excites the audience into why this is happening. The sounds in the trailer create alot of tension, making the audience almost scared but anticipating on what is going to happen.

Inception Trailer

On the link is the trailer to the movie Inception. There are various shots used, for example focusing on the prop that is very important to the films storyline i suspect using an extreme close up. After this, it moves on to the distirbution companies and any other companies involved showing them. The charcaters are introduced early on in the trailer. showing them one after eachother. I would not consider this in my trailer, as i would like there to be a mystery int the characters in the film, before giving too much away in the trailer. This would add a sense of suspense and mystery. A mention of the director is involved in the trailer, referring to the hit film the 'Dark Knight' which was very successfull. The main character is Leonardo DiCaprio, a well known actor who has feautured in many films as part of the Warner Brothers company.

Inception Posters

Inception Poster
Figure 1

This is one of the 3 posters that were created for the Inception film staring Leonardo DiCaprio. I think that this poster protrays the narrative of the film. I think, without watching the film, that it is one that involves buildings in some way, high class characters with an essence of violence. I can see this from the poster, with the buildings surrounding the characters, them dressed in smart clothing from a suit to a dress and weapons in the hand of the charcters.

Figure 2

Figure 2 is a comparison of another Warner Brothers film, directed by the same Christopher Nolan, that was so successfull that its used to promote the film. The film used to promote is called the Dark Knight, and by looking at the above image, you can see the similiarities in how they are used to make it so effective. Both using the effect of looking into the bulidings, with an effect of being surrounded by water is used on both posters. They are both holding an item. For the Dark Knight poster, the joker is holding his main character item of a jokers card, on the other hand i think that the main item for the inception main character is a gun.

Figure 3

In figure 3, all the main characters are included. I feel that the main effect in this is the vertical road that is behind the charcters. This gives the effect that the roads are closing in on the characters. Most of the characters are holding a weapon, which does tie into the narrative which would involve violence.

Inception Front Page Analysis

This is the front cover of film magazine, Total Film, advertising the film Inception. The front cover only consists of a colour scheme of red, blue, silver and white. By doing this, it allows all the colours to contrast against each other, without using too many of them. The main character is central into the magazine. By doing this, it can draw in readers by the actual profile of the celebrity actor, and attract people to go and see him in the film. The costume is very eye catching, along with the prop of the gun telling the reader a bit about the violence and mystery of the film. The text used, is the total film which has been altered to fit into the setting of the film and the name of the film that is advertised in front of the main character of it being Leonardo DiCaprio. There is a variety of buzz words and puffs used to advertise the magazine and hint at what article are inside, i will apply this to m magazine.

'Salt' Total Film Magazine Front Cover

This is the total film magazine front cover for the film 'Salt'. This is a film of a similar genre to what we want to produce. The most eye-catching thing in this front cover is the way the total film has been designed and the main chracter of Angelina Jolie. In my magazine front cover, i am going to make sure that the main character is the only thing on it, with the props of spray cans and graffiti used to draw in the attention of the reader by the story and unique aspects of the film. I feel that this magazine front cover has alot of text and information on it. When designing my front cover i am going to make sure that i don't make this as crowded, as i don't think it makes the front cover attractive and draws the attention off the main focus point of the film placed on the front. On the other hand, the colour scheme of black and organge contrasts very well, i will apply this to my front cover.
